Silek Harimau Minangkabau is a martial art from the Minangkabau province in Sumatra. The art is currently branded as Pencak Silat Machan Hitam after Maha Guru Richard Crabbe De Bordes. The lineage can be traced back to 1610 starting with Poyeng Lebah.

This style incorporates multiple postures which students use to evade and subdue an opponent. These postures allows students to fight from multiple heights and ranges using punches, kicks, knees and elbows. The transitioning of postures and striking allow students to lock and throw their attacker in a variety of situations and scenarios.

Class Format

Students who attend this class should expect to learn some of the traditional aspects of the art such as kuda (posture) and langkah (footwork). Striking from multiple heights and situations will be emphasized heavily as well. Students will learn how to translate and apply these traditional ideas into modern day combative scenarios.

Deadly Art of Malaysia: Harimau Berantai Silat

Harimau Berantai Silat is a Javanese style of pencak silat that focuses strongly on bladed combatives with an emphasis on efficiency and effectiveness of movement. Unlike many systems which begin with empty hand training and progress to armed combatives, Harimau Berantai Silat training begins with the knife, or pisau belati, and progresses through training with additional weapons like the karambit, kepak kecil (small axe), and others to culminate with empty hand training.

Following the principles of silap, silau, and silat the system of Harimau Berantai Silat utilizes tactics such as destruction of the weapon arm, blinding of the opponent, misdirection, and anatomically targeted cutting and stabbing to end the threat as quickly as possible.

Class Format

Each Harimau Berantai Silat class focuses around building in students the skills, habits, and conditioned response time necessary to survive a bladed assault through drills and the practice and deconstruction of techniques, or buah, with a progressively resisting partner.

Students wishing to earn rank specifically in Harimau Berantai Silat may do so during seminars with our instructor Professor Jak Othman, who visits from Malaysia to continue our development in the art twice per year.

Military Combat Art of the Philippines: Pekiti Tirsia Kali

Pekiti Tirsia Kali (PTK) is a martial art from the Central Philippines. This style incorporates weapons such as the sword, stick, and spear. There are also empty hand techniques and a grappling method called Dumog. PTK was introduced to the United States in 1972 by Leo T Gaje Jr. This system is taught to law enforcement and military groups around the world by its various instructors.

At the Wik Academy, we proudly teach PTK under the tutelage of Tuhon Leslie Buck. Our program maintains the tradition of PTK by focusing on the real world application of this art.

Class Format

Students who attend class will develop the necessary mechanics to apply the armed and unarmed techniques that are presented in class. The student will start by learning the basic mechanic and principal of the technique. As learning progresses, students will be pressure tested ensuring that they are able to apply the techniques in a realistic manner.

The Art of Eight Limbs: Muay Thai Kickboxing

Muay Thai is a combat kickboxing art and combat sport originating in Thailand with a strong emphasis on striking, full use of the body’s weapons, and close up fighting within the clinch. One of the key aspects of Muay Thai is its focus on turning as many areas of the body as possible into striking tools.

Muay Thai is often called “The Art of Eight Limbs” since it utilizes eight parts of the body as primary striking tools (two hands, two elbows, two knees, and two shins/feet). This provides Muay Thai a much wider range of striking options than many other traditional striking or kickboxing arts that focus primarily on use of hands only, like boxing, or hands and feet only, like Savate and Western kickboxing.

While not permissible in competition fights we also incorporate the ninth weapon of Muay Boran, headbutting. Our instruction in Muay Thai is separated into its use within self-defense situations in our core self-protection classes and into instruction in the combative sport side through our Muay Thai specific classes. The Muay Thai specific classes also provide a high level of conditioning training for those looking to get into competitive shape.

Class Format

Each Muay Thai class focuses on not only striking, but also learning a variety of defenses and evasions, drills to perfect form, conditioning exercises to increase your endurance and toughness, as well as sparring to hone your skills and be able to defend yourself effectively. You can expect a solid workout from every class and occasionally instructors will work in some calisthenics to better improve the conditioning level of students.

Teen Self-Defense classes prepare your young adult from physical threats as well as teaches them situational awareness and verbal tactics to avoid and de-escalate dangerous situations.

Scientific, Functional Self-Defense: Wing Chun

Wing Chun Kung Fu at the Wik Academy of Martial Arts and Self-Defense Cincinnati

Wing Chun Gong Fu (詠春功夫) is a traditional style of gong fu from Southern China that emphasizes the use of body structure and positioning to help smaller, potentially weaker fighters defeat a larger aggressor. Leverage, reflex-speed, and tactile sensitivity are utilized in close range to quickly dispatch an attacker while expending the least amount of time and energy possible.

Though it originates in the Qing Dynasty era the focus on efficient, effective movements over more flashy or acrobatic ones makes it a practical and effective street self-defense art to this day.

Our Wing Chun classes follow the traditional nature of the art while recognizing that the situations one encounters in modern self-defense situations have changed since the art’s development. Unlike some Wing Chun schools we train in defenses against attacks coming from a variety of arts like boxing, Jiujitsu, or Muay Thai and not just attacks from other Wing Chun practitioners.

Class Format

In an average class students can expect to spend some time working on the traditional forms or wooden dummy sets, engaging in two-person drills, practicing sensitivity exercises such as chi sau, learning and applying specific defense techniques, and at more advanced levels performing light contact sparring.

As we are an affiliate school of the Francis Fong Instructor Association our Wing Chun lineage comes through Sifu Francis Fong who was taught by Sifu Jiu Wan. Sifu Jiu Wan trained alongside Yip Man under Sifu Chan Wah-Shun at the Jing Mo Guen in Foshan and later with Yip Man in Hong Kong. While we do not currently directly promote in Wing Chun at the academy, students who are interested can receive ranking through the Francis Fong Association.

Bruce Lee's Hybrid Art: Jeet Kune Do

Jeet Kune Do (JKD for short) is both a hybrid martial art and a martial philosophy created by Bruce Lee that forms the core of our self-defense instruction at the Wik Academy of Martial Arts.

At its foundations JKD emphasizes efficiency and minimalism. Causing the greatest effect with the least energy expended and at the fastest speed possible is the goal of most of the techniques. The name Jeet Kune Do means ‘Way of the Intercepting Fist’ - although Bruce Lee noted it was just a name and that practitioners shouldn’t feel constrained to focusing on interceptions. Lee often referred to Jeet Kune Do as “the art of expressing the human body”.

Our Jeet Kune Do curriculum is designed to cover all aspects of self-defense including striking, grappling, weapons training, trapping, dealing with multiple assailants, and more. To this end we blend in the best aspects from a range of other arts including Wing Chun, Silat, Muay Thai, Kali, Western Boxing, Krav Maga, and Brazilian Jiujitsu among others.

Class Format

Each JKD class is structured to allow students to work up a sweat and get a good workout as they learn new techniques and develop their skills. While each class is unique you can generally expect kickboxing, skill drills, technique practice, and weapons training. Our Jeet Kune Do philosophy puts an emphasis on application, so while some solo forms are included most of the training will be done with a partner. Controlled sparring is added in at later levels to allow students to further hone using what they’ve learned against a resisting opponent.

We are officially certified in Sifu Larry Hartsell’s Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Grappling Association and while the core of our Jeet Kune Do and Jun Fan Gong Fu instruction stems from there our curriculum blends in elements from other systems as well and as a result follows a different rank progression. Students who wish to also attain rank specifically in the Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Grappling Association may speak with an instructor who will help them get started.
